One of the joys of staying in Flamborough is that you don’t need to get in the car to enjoy spectacular scenery. With its dramatic chalk cliffs, secluded coves, and wide-open skies, this stretch of the Yorkshire coast offers some of the best walks in the country and many start just steps from your door.

Here are some of the most memorable coastal walks in and around Flamborough.

1. Flamborough Head Circular Walk

A must-do for visitors, this circular route takes you around the iconic headland, with views of the famous lighthouse, sea stacks, and nesting seabirds. On a clear day, you can see for miles along the coast.

Distance: Around 3.5 miles (5.6 km), moderate, allow 2–2.5 hours.

Highlights: Lighthouse, dramatic cliffs, seabird colonies.

2. North Landing to Thornwick Bay

Starting at North Landing, this walk follows the cliff path past sea arches and caves carved by centuries of tides. It’s a short but spectacular route, perfect for an evening stroll.

Distance: About 1 mile (1.6 km) each way, steep in parts, 30 minutes.

Highlights: Rock formations, quiet coves, sea views.

3. Flamborough to Bempton Cliffs

For wildlife lovers, the walk from Flamborough to Bempton is unforgettable. In spring and summer, the cliffs are alive with puffins, gannets, and kittiwakes. The RSPB reserve has viewing platforms for safe birdwatching.

Distance: Approx. 3.5 miles (5.6 km) one way, moderate, allow 1.5–2 hours (longer if birdwatching).

Highlights: Puffins (April–July), panoramic sea views, nature reserve.

4. South Landing from Danes Dyke

This gentle route takes you through Danes Dyke’s ancient woodland before opening up to a quiet beach. It’s sheltered and peaceful - a contrast to the wild open cliffs.

Distance: Around 2.5 miles (4 km) circular, moderate, 1 hour.

Highlights: Woodland paths, pebble beach, picnic spots.

5. Bridlington via Sewerby

For a longer outing, follow the coastal path from South Landing towards Bridlington. Along the way, you’ll pass Sewerby Hall and Gardens before reaching the wide sandy expanse of Bridlington North Beach. Perfect for a full day’s walk or you can catch the bus back to Flamborough.

Distance: Approx. 3.5 miles (5.6 km) one way, moderate, allow 1.5–2 hours.

Highlights: Historic gardens, cliff-top views, seaside town.
